Explore SignatureRoads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced a new underground transport system in collaboration with Elon Musk's Boring Company. The Dubai Loop is a tunnel-based mobility system designed to improve connectivity between the city's busiest districts. With construction expected to begin soon, here's everything we know so far about the Dubai Loop project.
The Dubai Loop transport system is designed around a network of underground tunnels that allow vehicles to move passengers quickly between major destinations. Unlike traditional metro systems, the tunnels are narrower and engineered using modern tunnelling techniques that reduce construction time and overall cost.
This approach allows the city to increase transport capacity with limited disruption above ground, especially in commercial and tourism zones.
A defining feature of the Dubai Loop transport system is its construction method. The tunnels will measure approximately 3.6 meters in width and will be built using advanced tunnelling processes that are faster and more cost-efficient than conventional metro construction.
This method allows for quicker deployment, lower capital requirements, and reduced impact on surrounding infrastructure. It also provides flexibility for future expansion as demand grows.
Let's take a closer look at this new exciting addition to Dubai's effortless transportation system.
The first phase of the Dubai Loop tunnel project will introduce a 6.4-kilometer pilot route supported by four stations. This phase is designed to directly connect DIFC, Dubai Mall, and Burj Khalifa, areas that experience some of the city’s highest daily traffic volumes.
By strengthening first and last-mile connectivity, the system is expected to offer smoother commutes for workers, visitors, and residents. Once operational, this initial route is projected to move more than 13,000 passengers per day.
The first phase of the project is expected to be completed within two years. This stage is supported by an initial investment of approximately AED 565 million.
The full network is estimated to require around AED 2 billion in total investment, reflecting the scale of the planned expansion and supporting infrastructure.
Beyond the pilot stage, the long-term plan is to expand the Dubai Loop to a total length of 22.2 kilometers with 19 stations. This expanded network will connect the Dubai World Trade Center, Business Bay, and the wider financial district, creating a continuous underground link between major commercial hubs.
When fully developed, the system is expected to handle up to 30,000 passengers daily.
The initial phase will link DIFC, Dubai Mall, and Burj Khalifa through a 6.4 km route with four stations.
The first phase is expected to move over 13,000 passengers per day, with capacity increasing to around 30,000 passengers daily once fully expanded.
When completed, the network will extend up to 22.2 km and include 19 stations across central Dubai.
The system uses narrower tunnels and advanced tunnelling methods, allowing for faster construction, lower costs, and reduced surface disruption compared to traditional metro systems.
The first phase is expected within two years, while the full project will be delivered in stages as the network expands.
The project was introduced through an official RTA Dubai Loop announcement as part of Dubai’s wider transport development strategy.
